Preparing for Spring

January and February

Winter is the time for rejuvenation! Winter or dormant pruning services focus on structural and rejuvenation pruning. During these months, you can expect:

  •  Pre-spring Cleaning: Raking and grooming of shrub beds is necessary after the messy fall leaf season. Our team will get the beds ready for pre-emergent weed control applications, as well as bark installation that has been planned and scheduled for the spring.
  • Weed Control: We apply pre-emergent weed control to stop weed seed germination.
  • Fertilizer: Winter is the best time to fertilize shrubs and trees with slow-release, balanced nutrition.
  • Moss Control: February/March is the best time to control moss. A December application is necessary for some northern facing landscapes.
  • Winter Pansies: Annual flower beds need extra care in the winter. Monthly applications of fungicide keep pansies healthy. Periodic raking and cleaning out of beds keep flowers looking colorful and healthy.

Lawn Renovations

February and March

Aeration is recommended at least every other year, especially with our clay soil. Core aeration involves “plugging” to remove soil, thatch, and environmental deposits in the form of 1/2 to 3/4 inch diameter cores that are deposited on the surface and decompose and disappear after about 3 mowing services.

The benefits of aeration:

  • Increases the activity of soil microorganisms that decompose thatch.
  • Increases water, nutrient, and oxygen movement into the soil.
  • Improves rooting.
  • Enhances infiltration of rainfall or irrigation.
  • Helps prevent fertilizer and pesticide run-off from overly compacted areas.

De-thatching is recommended if the thatch layer of your lawn is greater than 1″ and aeration will not restore the turf to good health.

Top-dressing with 1/4″ to 1/2″ of 3-way soil (equal parts sand, loam, and compost) helps amend the existing soil after aeration.

Over-seeding with high quality seed, applying starter fertilizer, and top-dressing with peat moss protects seed and encourages germination.

Irrigation Installation and Repairs

April and May

Your landscape is healthier when your irrigation system is operating efficiently and effectively. It is important to check operation before the heat of the summer. We offer spring start-up services that include sprinkler inspection and adjustments. Our technician will provide a list of any necessary repairs and make recommendations to ensure your landscape is watered as efficiently and effectively as possible.
